Hawking with Dad

Written by Dawn Kohler

It is exciting when I pull on my brush pants, and get ready to go Hawking. I get our Jack Russell Terrier, Ivy, ready and grab our flushing sticks. My dad goes out to the mew to get our Red-Tailed Hawk.

Then, we walk to the woods to squirrel hawk. We keep banging on the trees and shaking vines. Ivy starts barking at a tree. Then we start looking for squirrels. Dad said, "There it goes into the squirrel nest." Luckily there was a vine leading to the squirrel nest. I started shaking the vine like crazy. The squirrel bails out of the tree. When it does the hawk is already on its way. It just misses the squirrel and the chase is on though the under brush. The squirrel quickly runs up another tree. The hawk smacks the squirrel on the tree and rides it to the ground. Dad rushes in to help dispatch it.

Then we sit and let the hawk feed up. While the hawk feeds up Dad hooks the jesses. Dad and I enjoy our hawking experiences together.
